"A Man Named Barnabas"

In the Book of Acts, we are introduced to a man by the name of Barnabas, which means son of encouragement. He was the first person to believe in Paul after his dramatic conversion experience and, as such, was instrumental in introducing him to the leaders of the Church in Jerusalem. When the disciples did not want to believe that Paul had truly repented and had become a believer in Jesus Christ, it was Barnabas who continued to see the best in both groups. As a result, the disciples eventually decided to give Paul a chance and Paul allowed them to mold him into one of the greatest champions of the faith.
But Barnabas’ generosity and encouragement didn’t end with Paul. When the first converts in Judea were trying to become established, it was Barnabas who sold his only piece of land and laid the proceeds at the apostles’ feet for distribution among the communities poor and needy members (see Acts 4:32-37).
It seems as though every time we read about this remarkable man he is encouraging those who are struggling in one way or another. We all need someone like Barnabas in our lives. More importantly, however, we need to be like him. We need to see the good in others. We need to live out our faith so it benefits not only ourselves but those whom God has sends into our lives.
The Scriptures tell us that Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of truth (Acts 11:24). Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the same could be said about us?
