"You Can Go Home Again!"

In his book The Road to Daybreak Henri Nouwen notes that in Luke 15:11-32 the wayward son never repents from his selfish ways. Even his decision to return home never took into consideration his family’s feelings. According to Nouwen, "He didn’t return because of a renewed love for his father. No, he returned simply to survive. He had discovered that the way he had chosen was leading him to death. Returning to his father was a necessity for staying alive." (p. 57-58)
Now, the father must have realized the reason for his son’s return. After all, while the boy confesses his sins, he never professes to love his father. All he really wants is a place to live and food in his stomach.
Regardless of his son’s motives, however, the father is overwhelmed with emotions. The love he had for this wayward child was so complete . . . so total . . . so unconditional that all he could do was welcome him home.
Reflecting on this unexpected reaction Nouwen continued: This is a very encouraging thought. God does not require a pure heart before embracing us. Even if we return only because following our desires has failed to bring happiness, God will take us back. Even if we return because being a Christian brings us more peace than being a pagan, God will receive us. Even if we return because our sins did not offer us much satisfaction as we had hoped, God will take us back. Even if we return because we could not make it on our own, God will take us back. Even if we return because we could not make it on our own, God will receive us. God’s love does not require any explanations about why we are returning. God is glad to see us home and wants to give us all we desire, just for being home. (ibid)
So if you are lonely or confused; if your life is a mess or the future is uncertain; if the news you have to share is good or bad go home! God is waiting for you.
